Pet Coughing and Sneezing

If your pet is continuously coughing and sneezing, these symptoms should not be easily dismissed. While there are perfectly benign reasons your pet could be experiencing these symptoms, there could also be something more serious going on. That is why Animal Hospital of Bentonville is here to offer Bentonville, AR residents emergency vet services and so much more. Here’s what you need to know about Pet coughing and sneezing.

.

Common Conditions that Cause Pets to Cough or Sneeze

These are a few common benign conditions that can cause these symptoms in your pet. However, these symptoms can also signify serious and even life-threatening conditions. That is why it is important to seek veterinarian care for your pet if it is regularly coughing or sneezing. Some conditions that cause these symptoms are:

  • Flu. Your pets can catch the flu. Because they usually do not have immune systems that are evolved at fighting off conditions like the flu, there are vaccinations available to help prevent this condition in your pet. If you suspect your dog has the flu, please warn your emergency vet before bringing your pet into the clinic so they can act to contain the virus.
  • Kennel Cough. This is a condition that is primarily associated with dogs, though cats can catch it too. If you suspect your dog has kennel cough, you will want to isolate it from other dogs and cats until you are certain of the diagnosis and contact your veterinarian to discuss your suspicions.
  • Allergies. Pets have these too. Some allergy symptoms display as skin irritation in pets though some pets do experience respiratory symptoms similar to humans. Our veterinarian can prescribe allergy medications to help reduce your pet’s suffering.

If your pet is constantly coughing and/or sneezing, it may be a sign of something more serious. Cats and dogs often exhibit these symptoms constantly if they have significant health problems such as:

  • Heat disease
  • Lung disease
  • Distemper
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Certain cancers

At Animal Hospital of Bentonville, our goal is to make sure all Bentonville, AR area pets have fast access to care when needed. If you suspect your pet has one of the conditions listed above or worry that it might be suffering from something more serious, we’ll work with you to make sure your precious pet gets prompt, compassionate care.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "Absolutely amazing people. They were very honest about my dog’s chances and made the difficult choice and the experience after much easier. If I weren’t already a client at the Centerton location I would come here in the future in a heartbeat."
    Michael M.
  • "First time here: Staff and doctor were very friendly. Quick service. We just adopted our dog a month ago, and they answered all my questions to double-check I was taking care of her correctly. Nice place!"
    Wendy C.
  • "I decided to try this new vet's office and was so glad I did. The staff is friendly, helpful, and professional. The waiting area is clean and welcoming. They were also extremely caring and gentle with my cat who is usually very frightened during an exam. I highly recommend this animal hospital."
    Susan D.
  • "Have always like the Vet here, first when they were at Rose Animal Clinic and now here. Great caring staff."
    Mark J.
  • "Hands down the best Vet Clinic I've ever visited. I switched after recently moving and this great location opened only a few blocks from my house. The team was great and worked to really let me know how my animals were doing and took the time to let me ask about any concerns. Even during covid the schedule is flexible and they're very accommodating. I fully trust them with my pets. If you choose to visit them, know you'll be in good hands."
